WHAT IS ARCHITECTURE ?
ARCHITECTURE is one of several professional
activities, law and medicine are others - which are evidently so necessary to mankind
that they have existed from almost the start of civilisation. Shelter is an elemental
need, Architecture is much more than merely building a shelter. It also attends
to psychological needs of the human being occupying it. It is the shaping of our
physical environment.
WHAT DO ARCHITECTS DO ?
Architect’s task is essentially to design building,
individual or groups of them for different purposes. Whether a building is in the
heart of a great city or on perimeter of village, it is for the use of the people
and should be designed with a compassionate understanding of those who work, live
or play within and around it. That it should be appropriate to its location, efficient,
economical and capable of enhancing the quality of life, need not be stressed. These
are the qualities which architects can still offer and these qualities are important
to communities. They need re-definition and the architect needs to reconfirm his commitment to them.
